  • Scope and Content
In the interview, Professor Nalini Joshi discusses her early life in Myanmar, including her childhood experiences and frequent relocations due to her father's work as a doctor. Her family emigrated to Australia, where she continued her education at Ferncourt Public School, Marrickville and Fort Street High School. She developed an early interest in literature and art, and chose to pursue mathematics rather than follow her father's career in medicine.

Joshi discusses her studies, completing a degree in applied mathematics at the University of Sydney and a PhD at Princeton University, focusing on solitons, solitary waves of light, which led to her ongoing research in integrable systems. She talks about her family and career, including academic positions at the Australian National University, the University of New South Wales, and the University of Adelaide. She later became the first female Chair of Applied Mathematics at the University of Sydney.

Professor Joshi reflects on her research, the challenges of communicating mathematics to broader audiences, and the structural barriers faced by women in academia, particularly during parenthood. She also discusses her role in co-founding the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) initiative and emphasizes the importance of independent thinking, risk-taking, and supporting women in the research workforce.
