  • General note

On 14 October 2023, more than 17.5 million Australians voted in a referendum to decide whether to recognise Indigenous Australians in the constitution by creating an independent advisory body, known as the Voice, to provide advice to governments on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The referendum was not successful, with a majority of Australians voting No, to the proposed amendment.
