- Scope and ContentStuart Harris discusses how the impact of World War II dominated his childhood and why he decided to migrate to Australia with the Big Brother Movement in 1947. Stuart talks about being sent to work on farms around Temora and then doing odd jobs in Sydney before joining the Commonwealth Taxation Department. Although being one of the few Protestants in a Catholic dominated Department, Stuart talks about how religious sectarianism fortunately did not prevent him from winning a Departmental scholarship in 1952 to study economics at Sydney University. Upon graduation, Stuart moved to Canberra to work at the Department of Taxation and then the Department of Overseas Trade. Following further study, Stuart went on to have a distinguished career in both academia and in the Commonwealth Public Service. Stuart says he has had two patrons during his life: Sir John Crawford and Prime Minister Bob Hawke. In the interview, he outlines the reasons why he thinks Australia’s relationship with China continues to be challenging.
