    Merle Elecia Parkes (1927-), was a pioneer in nursing education in Australia. Beginning her career as a nurse, she then specialised in midwifery and infant welfare. After five years in various clinical roles, she was inspired to be a nurse educator. Parkes was appointed principal nurse educator at the Royal Perth Hospital, 1962. She was a leader in introducing clinical nurse educators and clinical psychologists to support students. Parkes was instrumental in forming tertiary education for the nursing profession, which was introduced throughout Australia in the 1990s.
