Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Inspector Brendan Hurley speaks of his experiences during the 2019-2020 bushfires where he led strike teams that included 4-6 fire trucks and up to 16 firefighters, assisting in recovery and firefighting efforts throughout New South Wales. Brendan was deployed to 15 fires across the state over a total of 34 days from October 2019 to January 2020.

Brendan reflects on the practicalities of fighting fires and providing people with what they need in the aftermath of a devastating event. Brendan’s background in humanitarian aid was useful to help solve sewage problems, set up generators, provide water and food supplies, washing facilities, and WiFi for residents in areas that had been heavily impacted by fires. He speaks about his experiences going into a fire ground just south of Nowra to rescue 16 firefighters that had been overwhelmed by a fire front, not knowing whether he would find them dead or alive. Thankfully the four firefighting crews had survived the blaze, however two fire trucks were destroyed. Brendan also discusses his personal history, growing up in the Blue Mountains and Riverina regions of New South Wales, his career in Fire and Rescue NSW, and his work in the humanitarian aid sector.
