  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The 1869-1870 cruise of the British Royal Navy's Flying Squadron visited South America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Hawaii and South America (again). It was the first of its kind 'to visit all our distant shores' and its other aims were to show the British flag in the colonies and cement British naval power around the world. The Flying Squadron sailed into Sydney on the evening of 12 December 1869 and anchored
between North and South Heads for the night in the following order: the Liverpool, the Scylla, the Phoebe, the Endymion, the Barrossa, and the Liffey as guardship. The squadron steamed up the harbour the following afternoon and anchored in Farm Cove for 13 days.
