In 1955 a chance discovery in Canowindra, a small town in central western New South Wales, revealed an extensive fossil bed dating from the Devonian Period, containing several thousand fossilised fishes. It was decided that the fossils should remain in Canowindra, where they would form the basis of a dedicated museum. The Age of Fishes Museum, located in Gaskill Street, was officially opened in April 2001.
