Basim Al-Ansari was born in 1981 in Najaf, Iraq. He and his family fled the country in 1991 to avoid persecution, eventually arriving in Australia as illegal immigrants and spending over a year at Curtin Detention Centre in Western Australia. He is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Sydney.
