    L. Richard Smith was a private collector with particular interests in medals connected to early Australian exploration and settlement and to Wedgwood items of the same period.

    The medal was struck on the initiative of Sir Joseph Banks by his fellow members of the Royal Society. It was designed by Lewis Pingo and is one of 577 bronze specimens.
  • Scope and Content
    Bronze medal, the obverse with bust portrait of Cook inscribed 'IAC. COOK OCEANI INVESTIGATOR ACERRIMUS' around the circumference and 'REG. SOCIO SVO' below the bust; the reverse with Britannia leaning on a column while resting her hand upon a rudder which is fixed to a globe, inscribed 'NIL INTENTANTUM NOSTRI LIQUERE' around the circumference and 'AUSFICIIS GEORGIII' below the figure.
