L. Richard Smith was a private collector, in a letter to John W. Adams in October 1988 Smith wrote "My collecting and study interests are mainly related to medals connected with early Australian exploration and settlement (Cook, Banks, Solander etc.) and to Wedgwood items of the same period, marking Josiah Wedgwood's personal connections with scientific and humanitarian causes (eg. his connections with Matthew Boulton and with the anti-slavery movement)".
