Herbert Gordon Carter, of Darling Point, Sydney, N.S.W., born 24 Mar. 1885 was Principal Assistant, Electrical Engineer of the NSW Public Works Dept. when he applied for a commission in the A.I.F. on 27 Aug. 1914 at the age of 29. He embarked on HMAT Afric, Oct. 1914 and was promoted lieutenant, then captain of the 1st Battalion. He was wounded at Gallipoli, 23 May 1915 and was hospitalised in Alexandria and Helouan until Oct. 1915. After rejoining the unit he was made major, and transferred to 53rd Battalion, Feb. 1916 and then to the 5th Pioneer Battalion. He embarked on Transport Canada to France, June 1916 and was made Lieutenant-Colonel. In Jan. 1918 he was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig’s despatch and awarded the D.S.O. He returned to Australia on the Warwickshire in Apr. 1919 - Scope and ContentHandwritten account of the 5th Pioneer Battalion since formation at Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt, including experiences at the Somme, in Ypres and Messines, sent to Miss Aileen Small for possible publication in "Some of the Fifth Division's Glory"
