The 5th Division was an infantry division of the Australian Army which served during the First and Second World Wars. The Division was formed in February 1916 as part of the expansion of the Australian Imperial Force infantry brigades. In addition to the existing 8th Brigade, the new 14th and 15th Brigades were added which had been raised from the battalions of the 1st and 2nd Brigades respectively. From Egypt the division was sent to France, where they served in the trenches along the Western Front.

The compilation of the war book "Some of the Fifth Division's Glory" was intended to make the work a 'worthy souvenir of the Fifth's achievements written by the officers and men who made them possible’. Australian artists contributed and many well-known war photographs were reproduced. The committee included: General H. E. Elliott (president), Colonel W. E. H. Cass and Messrs. J. G. Lockley, W. R. Charlton and S. Ure Smith. Contributions were asked for from anyone in the Division on the following subjects: (1) The most interesting character in the unit from General to Private; (2) The best yarn about the unit; (3) The most interesting unofficial story connected with the Division or anyone in it; and (4) The bravest thing personally known of a man in the Division. The undertaking was voluntary and any proceeds were to be devoted towards some Divisional memorial.
