  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sali Herman, 1898-1993 was born in Switzerland. He immigrated to Australia in 1937 in response to the rise of the Nazi party in Germany where he could concentrate on painting. He studied at the George Bell Studio, with fellow students Russell Drysdale and David Strachan. He lived in Potts Point from 1941. He won the 1944 Wynne Prize for his painting of McElhone Stairs. He was appointed an official war artist in 1945 and worked in the Pacific for five months, recording scenes in Lae, Torokina, Bougainville and Rabaul. After the war Herman had a successful career as a painter, exhibited widely and won several major prizes. He received the Wynne Prize three times and the Sulman Prize twice. He is renown for his urbanscapes.
