Samuel Lissing was born in Amsterdam in 1921. At the beginning of the war he was protected from deportation by working as a diamond cutter. From 1943 however, he was transported to various concentration camps, including Auschwitz and Monowitz. In 1945 Samuel was forced to take a death march to Gross-Rosen concentration camp (Germany) and then take trains to camps at Dachau and Mueldorf. He was being transported in open train wagon when he was liberated by the American Army in May 1945.

After the war Samuel returned to the Netherlands, where he reunited with his brother and his uncle. In 1951 he came to visit his brother in Australia and was eventually granted residency in 1954.
