  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Irma Nemeny, nee Schonwald, was born in Tiszakarad, Hungary, in 1925. Her father was a farmer. After the Germans occupied Hungary in March 1944, her father was taken away and her brother was put into forced labour in Budapest. In May Irma moved into the Monor Ghetto with her mother.

Both Irma and her mother were transported to Auschwitz in July, 1944. Irma left her mother behind when she was taken to the camps of Stutthof, Thorn and finally Bromberg. She was put to work digging trenches in freezing conditions. In January 1945 Irma was taken on a forced march from Bromberg to Krone, Poland, where the camp was liberated by the Russians.

Irma returned to Hungary after the war. Only her brother survived the war. Irma was married in 1949 and went to Israel where her daughter was born in 1951. In 1956 Irma went to Canada before arriving in Australia in 1957.
