  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Catherine Lamb was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1906. She worked as a secretary in an elevator company until she married in 1930. Her husband was an architect and together they ran a holiday resort he had built on the Danube River outside Budapest. In 1937 Catherine started an agency to send domestics to England.

After the German occupation, the building where Catherine lived became a Jewish designated house. Catherine was called up for the labour force but escaped. She fell ill and went to a Jewish hospital which was actually an empty school, where she remained alone and bleeding without food or water for at least two days. From there she found herself in Bergen Belsen concentration camp, Germany. She has no memory of the camp.

After liberation Catherine, still sick, returned to Budapest and had an operation without anaesthetic. She recuperated and set up as a stamp dealer. Catherine left Hungary in 1946 and went via Vienna to Paris, where she lived until migrating to Australia in 1950.
