  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Magda Mariam Winston (nee Braun, wid. Grun) was born in Topolcany,(Czechoslovakia) in 1914. At the beginning of the war she lived in Banovce nad Bebravou. In 1941 deportations to Majdanek started but Magda and her parents were saved by papers given to them by the Slovakian President, Tiso.

In November 1942, Magda's husband was arrested and was kept until Slovakian partisans arrived and liberated the town. In September 1944 Magda heard the Germans were returning, so she fled with her husband on false papers to Bansca Bystrica. They spent the rest of the war in the mountains near Banovce. After being told to depart from partisans they were staying with, Magda and her husband fled to a hut in the forest where they stayed for 4 months before finding a village.

After the war Magda walked back to her home town and stayed in Czechoslovakia until 1948. After spending several months in England she then emigrated to Australia.
