  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Marika (Marianna) Weinberger was born in Kosice (Czechoslovakia) in 1928. In August, 1941 there was a roundup of Jews in Hungary that included some of her aunts, uncles and cousins. In 1944 the Germans entered Kosice and Marika's family moved into a ghetto. In June she was transported to Auschwitz and then on to Kaiserwald concentration camp near Riga (Latvia). In Kaiserwald, allied bombing forced Germans to retreat with the camp inmates. Marika was transported by barge to Stutthof concentration camp (Danzig) then to a camp at Gluwen. In April 1945 she was forced to march to Ravensbruck where Marika was evacuated again and arrived at Malchov (Mecklenburg) in May 1945. The day after she arrived in Malchov she was liberated by the the Russian Army.

Marika returned by truck to Prague and migrated to Australia via Paris, in 1947.
