  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Braham (Abraham) Stern was born in Svalava (Czechoslovakia) in 1930. In 1944 he and his family were sent with other Jews to the Mukachevo Ghetto (Munkács Ghetto) and then were transported to Auschwitz (Poland). A few weeks later, Braham was moved on to Mauthausen-Gusen Concentration Camp (Austria). A friendship with two other men helped him survive brutal conditions and severe work in stone mines. Braham became sick early in 1945 and stayed in his bunk for two or three weeks until the camp was liberated by the American Army.

After Braham had received medical treatment and recovered from his illness, he returned to Czechoslovakia by train. There he reunited with two of his sisters and brother-in-law. He then moved to Friedland (Sudeten) and became an apprentice watchmaker. In 1947 Braham emigrated to Australia, via Paris, through the Jewish Welfare and Guardianship Society.
