  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Nick Hunt, formerly Miklos Hutterer, was born in Vac, Hungary, in 1913. He grew up in a rural area, but had a childhood rich in the Jewish life. Nick was married in 1936. He bought his uncle's bakery and continued the business.

Restrictions on Jews were introduced in 1941. In 1942 Nick was called up and sent to Kiev, Romania, with the Hungarian Army and put to work as forced labourer. After being sent home on leave, Nick was forced to move into the Vac ghetto. He was subsequently taken to Bor, Yugoslavia, to work on building the railway line. There he joined the partisans and lived in the mountains.

Nick met up with his wife in Szeged, Romania, in 1945. After the war they lived in Budapest and Vienna before migrating to Australia in 1951.
