Kathleen Hay, nee Ecker, was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1923. She came from an assimilated middle class family. The Germans arrived in Budapest in March, 1944. In May Kathleen was sent to the labour camp at Csepel brickworks with 200 other Jewish girls.

Two months later Kathleen was transported to Auschwitz. In October, she was moved to the labour camp at Liebau, Germany, where she worked in an anti-tank artillery factory. In May 1945 the camp was liberated by the Russians and Kathleen returned with a group of girls to Budapest, walking part of the way.

Kathleen was reunited with her parents in Budapest. She remained in Hungary, married and had a son, before migrating to Australia in 1957.
