  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Sami Schonberg was born in Olmitz (Czechoslovakia) in 1917. After a German invasion in 1940 his business was closed and he became a traveller. As the number of Jews who were being deported increased, Sami was caught trying to flee to France and was put inside various prisons on false papers. He was eventually found out and sent to deportation barracks with other Jews. In January 1943, he jumped off a train and escaped. Sami then acquired new false papers through a contact in Brussels (Belgium) and went into hiding there until it was liberated by British and American Army. Sami moved to France in 1960 and later emigrated to Australia.
