Eugene Grunbaum, was born in Jaszalsoszentgyorgy, Hungary, in 1928. When the Germans occupied Hungary, he and his family were taken to an assembly point in a big factory at Monor, remaining there for about three weeks. From there they were transported to Auschwitz, Poland, arriving in June, 1944.

Eugene was separated from his family during the selection process on the station platform. H never saw those family members again. From Auschwitz he was transferred to Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. He spent a few months in Troglitz, a sub camp of Buchenwald, and was returned to Buchenwald after hurting his leg. In Buchenwald he was held in the children's camp, where he was very sick.

The camp was liberated by the Americans in April, 1945. Eugene spent a year recuperating from tuberculosis in Davos, Switzerland. Afterwards he studied Mechanical Engineering in Geneva, before migrating to Australia in 1949.
