Ignatz Roth was born in Negrovo (Czechoslovakia) in 1923. His father died when Ignatz was young and Ignatz's time was split between family in Negrovo and Munkacs, Rutheria. In 1941 he was amongst several Jews rounded up by Hungarian military police and taken to the Russian Front. in 1941 he was transported to the Dniester River where there was a massacre, he feigned death and escaped with 9 others.

In 1944 Ignatz was rounded up again with his family when they were home in Negrovo for Passover and he was deported to Buna (Monowitz), a sub-camp of Auschwitz. Whilst there, he played fiddle in the camp band. When Buna was evacuated in December 1944, Ignatz was marched for three days to Gleiwitz, another sub-camp of Auschwitz. He was then transported to Buchenwald (Germany) and he was finally liberated by the American Army in April 1945.

After the liberation, Ignatz returned to Munkacz and then Negrovo where he reunited with surviving family members. He moved through Romania, Hungary, Austria and Italy before emigrating to Australia in 1951.
