  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Miklos Denny, formerly Dancziger, was born in Sarospatak, Hungary in 1910. He was sent to his first labour camp in 1939. Later he was taken to Seredina Buda in the Ukraine. He worked in the bakery there until 1943, when the Germans retreated as the Russians approached. The Germans marched the camp inmates to Brest-Litovsk, Russia.

In 1944 Miklos was taken to Warsaw, Poland, and after the uprising to Hanzevitch and Luninec in Belarus. In September the remnants of the group managed to buy a train from the Germans and travelled to Kassaujfalu, Hungary. In December Miklos found his wife and child in Budapest in a Wallenberg safe house. They all went into hiding until the Russians arrived.

After the liberation Miklos stayed in Hungary and joined the Communist Party, but because of increasing anti-semitism he fled with his daughter in 1956, arriving in Australia in January, 1957.
