  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Robert Bogdany, born in Budapest, Hungary in 1931. In the early 1940's his father lost his job as bank clerk because of the anti- Jewish laws. His family took in non-Jewish tenants and his father sold chocolates door to door.

The Germans entered Budapest in March, 1944, on the day planned for his Robert's barmitzvah. His father was taken into forced labour and Robert moved with his mother into a designated Jewish House. In October he moved to the ghetto with his mother while his aunt and grandmother, who had Christian identity papers, lived outside the ghetto.

After the war, Robert's mother inherited his aunt's grocery store and she remarried. Robert joined the army, trained as a radar technician and rose to the rank of Sargeant Major. During the Hungarian uprising Robert escaped with his stepfather and came to Australia in 1957. His mother followed in 1963.
