  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Laura Bogdany, nee Leichtmann, was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1918. She was the youngest of six children in a poor family. Her father died when she was ten years old. She completed her education in the Communist party. Laura was apprenticed for five years in a chocolate factory, at same time working for the Social Democrat party.

    Laura married Alex Emery, a non Jew and the leader of an underground anti-Fascist movement. In 1943 she joined her husband and a partisan group in the Ukraine and lived in the mountains.

    Laura came to Australia with her husband after the 1956 Hungarian revolution and married Robert Bogdany after the death of her first husband Alex.
