  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Paul Kalina was born in Beregszasz (Berehovo), Hungary in 1910. He joined the Czech army in March 1938, but was sent home in November when Beregszasz again became a part of Hungary. Paul was then conscripted into the Hungarian Army for 8 months. From 1940-1942 he was sent to labour camps in Transylvania, Carpenteria and on the Russian front. In 1943 when the Hungarian and German armies retreated, the Jewish forced labourers stayed behind and Paul was one of those taken prisoner by the Russians.

Paul was sent to camp in Siberia till 1944 when he joined the newly formed 3rd Brigade of Czech Army. After war, he settled with his wife in Prague and worked for the Czech Government defending political prisoners. In 1949 they left Czechoslovakia for Australia via Vienna.
