Frida Milder, nee Herman, was born in the village of Bunkovce, in east Slovakia in 1924. After the Germans invaded in 1944, she was taken with her family to a ghetto in Ungvar (now Uzhorod, Ukrainia). In April 1944, Freda was sent to Auschwitz.

Frida was kept in Auschwitz with her sister until being transported to Ravensbruck Concentration Camp (Germany) in January 1945. Five weeks after she arrived she was marched to Taucha, a sub camp of Buchenwald. After the camp was liberated by the Russians in May 1945, she travelled to Kosice, Slovakia, where her future husband was. They were married 6 weeks later and emigrated to Australia in 1950.
