  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Total Environment Centre was formed in 1972 as an action and information centre for the environment movement. The first full time environment centre in Australia, TEC initiated long term campaigns and research and when necessary, took immediate action in crisis situations. It also assisted local groups and individuals in their endeavours to safeguard the environment.

The Total Environment Centre was involved in many activities including political lobbying, wilderness and wildlife protection, urban planning, environmental law and community involvement. Most of these activities were run by volunteers who formed a number of committees including Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals Committee, Plant Diversity and Protection Committee, Urban Parks Steering Committee and Endangered Species Committee. A small group of paid staff developed campaigns, spoke to the media, advised local groups and provided information to the public and government.
