Lewis Pingo (1743-1830) designed the medal which was struck for the Royal Society in commemoration of Captain Cook. This medal bears a profile portrait of Cook which resembles the Dance portrait rather than those by Hodges and Webber. Pingo was chief engraver to the Royal Mint.

Caption accompanying medal in volume originally housing medal 'The 'Copley Medal'. On his return from Second Voyage in 1774, Captain Cook was elected a Member of the Royal Society and in 1776 received the Copley Medal in gold now in British Museum, for his discoveries. The Medal is by Lewis Pinger, Chief Engraver to the mint. This Silver Medal was struck in 1784'.
