  • General note

Signed with monogram ('TH' superimposed) and dated 1849 in lower right corner
Titled in pencil, in Huxley's? hand, on mount below drawing. Also written on mount in ink is 'Professor Huxley Queensland 1849' followed by an indecipherable note, both in an unknown hand

The sketch is very similar to one in the Huxley papers held by the Unwin Library, South Kensington; see photo at SPF/Kennedy, E.B.C. - Expedition. The Unwin sketch appears to be the original of the illustration reproduced in Huxley, T.H. - Diary of the voyage of H.M.S. Rattlesnake ... London, Chatto & Windus, 1935, pl.7, facing p.134 (ML ref. 980/12A1). The signature on the ML sketch is very similar to that on a sketch reproduced in the above 'Diary' (pl.2, facing p.48) titled 'Chamarelle Falls, Mauritius'. The sketch is filed with a newspaper clipping dated 1931 and headed 'Darwin and Huxley'; and a letter to newspaper headed 'Huxley's romance'.
