    In 1848 William Smith Smith O'Brien, a member of the Young Ireland Movement, was convicted of treason and sentenced to transportation. He arrived in Hobart in 1849. At first he refused to give his parole but after an unsuccessful attempt to escape on an American whaler he changed his mind and was granted a ticket-of-leave. In 1854 he received a pardon and sailed for Europe.
  • Scope and Content
    In this letter O'Brien informs Lieutenant-Governor Sir William Denison that he is renewing his parole for another six months (1p.).
    Enclosed with the letter is a Police Description of O'Brien.
