In 1848 Thomas Francis O'Meagher (more commonly spelt Meagher), a member of the Young Ireland Movement, was convicted of treason and sentenced to transportation. He arrived in Hobart in 1849. He was soon granted a ticket-of-leave and permitted to live on parole in the Campbell Town district. In January 1852 he began planning his escape. He withdrew his parole and made his way to the north coast where he was picked up in Bass Strait by the Elizabeth Thompson. He sailed to Pernambuco in Brazil and then on to New York where he arrived in May. - Scope and ContentIn this letter, addressed to Thomas Mason, Police Magistrate of of Campbell Town, Meagher withdraws his parole prior to his escape (3.pp).
