    Photographs - Two, 1/4 plate ambrotype portraits, in pinchbeck frames with glass front, stored in octagonal shaped composition Union case ornamented with elaborate floral design in relief on the outside, hinged lid, and lined in crimson-dark red velvet. - 8.7 x 6.7 cm.   • Scope and Content
    The female in this portrait wears a dark coloured satin dress comprised of a plain full skirt and separate bodice, fastened at centre front with jet buttons in floral design below a [black] lace collar. The bodice is loosely pleated across the chest and has a dropped shoulderline marked by braid above full sleeves, closed at wrist with lace cuffs and ruched, braid-trimmed Renaissance Revival style panes down length. Sitter also wears a bead necklace with pendant, a gold brooch and holds a purse attached to a gold muff chain.

    Identified from pencil inscription on the front of case MIN 406.
    The ambrotypes show the subject of the portrait in slightly changed poses.
    Due to the purplish colour of the glass used, it is possible that the portrait was taken at the Freeman Brothers studio known to have used this glass -- Curator of Photographs, August 2004
