  • Physical Description
    Drawings - 2 pencil drawings on one sheet - 28 x 38 cm.
  • Scope and Content
The primary sketch shows a boat [the Pinnace] with a cannon and several men on board. To the left of this vessel is another boat with a man firing at the native canoes. In the top left-hand corner are two studies of figures that appear on the main boat.
The sketch on the reverse depicts four natives, possibly from New Guinean or the Louisiade Archipelago, and a canoe.
  • General note

Previously, this sketch was ascribed to O.W. Brierly, and the sketch on the reverse, "Ye natives finding ye Grapes are soure" to Thomas Henry Huxley. As the sketches are not signed, these attributions are difficult to substantiate.
The inscription is a legend, with number "1" referring to the studies, and "2" to the sails.
The sketch of the Pinnace has pinpricks along the bow of the boat and throughout the drawing that indicates it may have been a preparatory sketch for a print or another drawing.
Dated from the time that the H.M.S. Rattlesnake was in New Guinea waters.
Affixed to the reverse of the sketch (side 1b), is a white rectangular auction label with black letters, "254". This label is similar to labels that appear in the collection: Sketches on board the H.M.S. Rattlesnake made during the coastal survey of the passage between the Great Barrier Reef and the east coast of Australia, ca. 1848 / Oswald W. B. Brierly (PX*D 81 Mitchell Library) and other works purchased by D.S. Mitchell.
A similar sketch, though of a different scale, [Pinnace and boat firing on native canoes] is located at SV*/NG-E/5 Mitchell Library.
