  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The 1846-1850 expedition of the Royal Navy frigate, H.M.S. Rattlesnake, surveyed the Great Barrier Reef, the Louisiade Archipelago, Torres Strait, and New Guinea coast. Brierly joined the expedition in 1848. Onboard was Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), assistant surgeon, and zoologist John Macgillivray (1821-1867). The exploration party suffered severe casualties including the death of the ship's Commander, Owen Stanley, in 1850. -- Reference: The Dictionary of Australian Artists / Joan Kerr (Ed.)
