  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

James E. Bicheno, born in England, was appointed Colonial Secretary of Van Diemen's Land in 1842.
Edward Boyd, born in England, was appointed Deputy-Surveyor-General in Van Diemen's Land in 1829 and was promoted in 1839 to the position of Surveyor-General after George Frankland's death. As Lieut-Governor Franklin was dissatisfied with his performance, Boyd was removed from office by 1841.
George Frankland, born in England, initially served as Assistant Surveyor of Van Diemen's Land in 1827 then became head of the Department from 1828-1838. Frankland began the general trigonometrical survey of Tasmania and believed that exploration and discovery were major functions of his position and those within the Survey Department.
