James Calder was a surveyor who was born in England. In 1829 he was appointed assistant surveyor under the surveyor-general Edward Dumaresq in Van Diemen's Land. Calder became one of the colony's most distinguished early surveyors accompanying Alexander McKay, Lieut-Governor Franklin, and others on exploratory expeditions.
