    Volumes contain mainly personal correspondence to Ella, reports and comments on Ella's activities, and welcoming to posts. Many letters are from fellow clergyman and are addressed to "my dear brother" whilst Ella was located in Sydney, Samoa, and the Loyalty Islands. Some letters are not composed in English

    ca. 1836, 1839, 1843, 1847-1858; Includes some letters addressed to Eliza Black, and an identified journal on notepaper, and a memorandum book. Most letters are to Ella whilst stationed at Upolu, Samoa (Call No.: A 202)

    1859-1862; Includes receipts; quotes; and printed circular notice announcing Ella's business as a general printer and bookbinder corner of Pitt and King Streets.     Vol. 11
    1877, 1893-1895, 1898 ; Contains some correspondence, accounts, notes, meeting minutes, tables of languages, and programmes for meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science in Brisbane and Adelaide. The notes include descriptions of Polynesian native clothing; the Gilbert Islands; and Iainan language. The tables include comparisons of the dialects of Polynesia, Malya, Malagasy and Australian; Indo-Polynesian words; Malayo-Polynesian words; Samoan words from Malayan roots; dialects of the Malay Archipelago. Notes are often on the reverse of stationery of Sydney companies such as Wood & Company (Livery business on Elizabeth & Castlereagh Street), and Andrews Bros (monumental sculptures, Elizabeth St). There is also a flyer for a Young Ladies school at Rathomore, Petersham, with classes conducted by Misses Ella. (Call No.: A 212)

    ca. 1888-1899; Includes letters of sympathy regarding the loss of Ella's son; Daily Telegraph map of Sydney tramways, 1890; invitations; and notes made in non-English language. At the back of the volume are 6 photographic portraits, four of which are titled: Dr MacFarlane, Rev. S. Ella, Commandant Booth, General Booth [ie. William. First general of the Salvation Army]. There are also ca. 78 engraving portraits of various ministers; and photographs of Islanders with missionaries and their families and outside dwellings (residences and churches); and unidentified ships (Call No.: A 215)

Black; accounts; handwritten excerpts from the Bible in notebook format; notes on religious instruction; "Almanak Iai, 1875" printed page showing calendar year; notes on dialect changes of the Indo-Polynesian language; notes on alphabet, vocabulary, and grammar; Petersham Young People's Institute first session, 1896 (typed sheet); Hordern Brothers, Pitt Street, advertising flyer; anthropological notes. At the back of this volume are 4 photographs of Reverend Ella's family, home, and church in Loyalty Islands; and a missionary's house in New Hebrides (Call No.: A 216)
