  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Missionary Society, formed in 1795 and renamed the London Missionary Society in 1818, sent missionaries to the South Seas with the objective of spreading Christianity. The missionaries learnt the indigenous languages in order to translate the Scriptures, and use this as a medium of instruction to teach the Islanders to read and write in their own language.
The Register of London Missionary Society, Missionaries Deputations, lists Ella as missionary number 482 who was appointed to Samoa as a printer in 1847. He was principally stationed on Upolu where he administered the "Mission Press" and participated in other forms of Protestant Christian work. In 1864, Ella joined the Loyalty Island's Mission settling on Uvea, where Roman Catholics obstructed his efforts. Ella retired from his work as a Missionary in 1875 and relocated to Sydney. -- Reference: Archives, Manuscripts and Rare Books Division, Library, School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London
