    Dated from time A.W. Scott sent orginal drawings for this lithograph to London - see Scott to Sir W. Macarthur 19 December 1854 ZA 2936 p.185 Mitchell Library Manuscripts
    A hand written note, at PXE 78/3, reads "Two finished proof Plates of the 'Australian Lepidoptera', sent out to A.W. Scott in 1853, by William Orr & Co, Amen Corner, London - Publication then abandoned in consequence of the expense"
    A pre-publication advertisement, printed on or before January 1853, is at PXE 78/4
    This lithograph appears to be a trial print for Alexander Walker Scott's unpublished version of his Australian Lepidoptera. Scott first attempted to publish this book - illustrated by his daughters Harriet and Helena - in the mid-1850s, but was unsuccessful. An original drawing for this print (apparently from this unpublished version) is in the Australian Museum: see Marion Ord, Moths and Butterflies, 1988, p.45: Q709.94/49 ML Printed Books
