  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Ernest Marcuse (1900-1985) was born in Berlin, Germany and studied at the Berlin School of Interior Design and Cabinetmaking and the Reimann School then worked as a freelance commercial artist. Marcuse fled Nazi Germany and migrated to Australia as a refugee, however was not interned, 1939.

    Marcuse was employed by The Argus focusing on war themes and events and then employed by the Australian Army creating artworks for officer training manuals, 1942-1945. Post war, he resumed freelance work and painted landmark locations around Melbourne and Sydney in his spare time.
