  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The first of the Milson family to settle in Australia was James Milson senior. Born in England in 1783, he arrived in Sydney in 1806 and gained employment as a farm labourer. By 1820 he had been granted 100 acres at Pennant Hills. Five years later he acquired land on the North Shore of Sydney Harbour. In 1829 he is recorded as also holding land at Castle Hill and Wollombi. In later years he acquired more land. He was a keen yachtsman and was a founder of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. In 1810 he had married Elizabeth Kilpack by whom he had six children. He died in 1872. His eldest son, James Milson junior, was born in 1814. He joined the firm of Robert Campbell Jun. & Co. and became one of Sydney's most successful businessmen. In the 1850's he embarked on pastoral ventures in New England and Queensland. In 1863 he helped found the Milson's Point Ferry Co. He was also a director of the Bank of NSW, the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. and other firms. Like his father he was a yachting enthusiast and his yacht Era was well-known on Sydney Harbour in the 1860s. He married twice and died in 1903, leaving six children.
