    Ion Llewellyn Idriess, known as Jack was born in Waverley, Sydney in 1899. From his late teens he travelled extensively around NSW, working in a variety of itinerant jobs. In 1914 he enlisted in the 5th Light Horse Regiment, AIF and saw action in Gallipoli and the Middle East. In 1928 he settled in Sydney as a freelance writer who would have a profound influence on Australian publishing and literature. He wrote on a multitude of topics, including travel, recollection, biography, history and anthropology. Between 1927 and 1969 he published more than 50 books, almost entirely with Angus & Robertson. Generally non-fiction, but written in a narrative, story style, they were extremely popular and were instrumental in promoting several Australian legends including The Light Horse, John Flynn, Harold Lasseter, and Sir Sidney Kidman.

    He used the following pen names for contributions to newspapers and magazines: Gouger, Sea Nomad, Atherton, Up North, Grafton, Up Top, Two Eyes, Fingerpoint, Brolga Bill, Hadahoss, Island Exile, Roamer, Northern Star, Island Gull, Cyclone Jack, Queensland Jack, Island Exile, Roamer, Babat Stone, Gudang, Wild Seaman, Bokus, Ishmael, Papua Jack, Coralier, Wanderer, Grumpy, Wagga Bill, Zogo Man, Kaisinik and others
