New Zealand-born Rosemary (Rosie) Scott (1948-2017) was an award-winning author,
writer and editor, strongly committed to activism. After success with her first novel Glory
Days, shortlisted for New Zealand Book Awards, she moved to Brisbane and then Sydney.
Scott went on to write five more novels, short stories, essays, and edited anthologies. She
was active in the Australian writing community, serving on the board and executive of the
Australian Society of Authors (ASA) for 10 years, and was Vice President of the Sydney
PEN Committee. Scott campaigned extensively on human rights issues, she co-edited
anthologies on refugees and asylum seekers with Thomas Keneally, and was co-founder of
Women for Wik, a group dedicated to reconciliation with Aboriginal people. She studied
counselling, taught writing course for inmates of Long Bail Jail and creative writing at UTS,
and actively mentored other writers. In 2016 she was awarded Order of Australia medal
(AM) for ‘significant service to literature as an author, and to human rights and inter-cultural
understanding’. She died of a brain tumour in 2017.
