  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Alfred Schwartz (1903-1980) was born in Vienna, Austria. He gained a Diploma in Engineering from Technology Gewerbe-Museum, Vienna, and worked as a mechanical engineer. After moving to Australia, he worked as a design engineer for an electrical firm and then the New South Wales Department of Public Works. Alfred Schwartz joined the University of New South Wales School of Physics as a technical officer, 1953. He gained a Master of Science in Applied Physics, 1958 and was a Lecturer in Physics until 1968. Alfred Schwartz gained a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics, 1978.

    Margarete Viktoria Schwartz (nee Willfarht) (1910-1994) was born in Vienna, Austria. She worked as a dress maker or clothing maker and married Alfred Schwartz in Vienna, 15 April 1936. Alfred and Margarete Schwartz moved to Australia with financial assistance from the Anglo-American Society of Friends, 1939. Alfred and Margarete Schwartz became naturalised British subjects of the Commonwealth of Australia, 1945. Margarete Schwartz died 1994 and left her estate, if her husband and sisters had predeceased her, to The Society of Friends (Quakers), Sydney.
