  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Arthur Wigram Allen was born on 4 February 1862 in Glebe, Sydney. He was the grandson of George Allen, founder of Allen, Allen and Hemsley, the oldest legal firm in Australia, established in 1822. In 1885, following the death of his two elder brothers, Arthur assumed control of the Sydney firm and business interests. On 15 September 1891, he married Ethel Grace Lamb (1868-1929) with whom he had four children. He had a fascination with photography and new technologies of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and took extensive photographs of Sydney city, family and social events between about 1890 and 1934. He died on 2 October 1941 in Woollahra, Sydney.
