  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Errol Black was born in 1940 in Leichhardt, Sydney. At 14, he left school and was apprenticed to the Lintas advertising agency and attended night classes at East Sydney Technical College and the Julian Ashton Art School. He held his first art exhibition at the John Paynter Gallery with sculptor Peter Speight. He had his own graphic art business and worked freelance, producing works for many Australian and international advertising agencies including Australian Women's Weekly, Australian Labour Party campaigns; Louis the fly; Colonel Sanders for Kentucky Fried Chicken, and various airlines including the British Overseas Airways Corporation, American Airlines and Japan Airlines. He also created artwork illustrating his personal life and interests including travel, love for the cities of Sydney and Newcastle, and his suffering from dementia. He died in 2023.

    24 drawings and watercolours of various advertising motifs and charcoal sketches of Black’s personal struggles with dementia.

    67 drawings and watercolours of various advertising motifs, caricatures, scenes in Sydney and New South Wales. Includes some invitations and ephemera cards pasted into bound pages.

    11 certificates presented to Errol Black for his artworks, including the Children’s Art Show 1951; Humane Poster Competition 1953; Health Week Exhibition 1951, 1953, 1955

    7 sketchbooks containing 149 drawings and paintings including life studies of men, women and children; landscapes, beach and street scenes in Sydney and travels through Italy, Spain, Morocco, India, Vietnam and other locations.

    Pamphlets, brochures, ephemera and advertising material for various companies and projects including American Airlines; packaging for Lolly Gobble Bliss Bombs [flavoured popcorn snack]; pop-up card for British Overseas Airways Corporation. Includes one of a limited edition run of 500 posters for the Australian Labor Party First State Conference, 17-23 February 1979 signed by Bill Hayden, Frank Sleeman and Edmund Casey.

    12 newspaper clippings, including from The Sun and The Sun-Herald, dated between 20 September 1971 and 11 November 1985

    2 published books, The Miracle of Sex, inscribed “To June, 1972, from Errol”; the Australian Golden Book ABC Australian Animal and Bird;

    3 copies of Life Is Full of Surprises pamphlet on childbirth and childhood by the Australian Mutual Provident Society and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children N.S.W. 1 issue of Shoalhaven News, May 1967; 1 issue of Adgauge, vol. one, no. 2, June 1981; 1 issue of Adgauge, vol. one, no. 2, June 1981.

    1 Job Description Book listing Black’s jobs, possibly through the 1990s.
