  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Bettington (1770-1841) and Susannah Brindley (1767-1799) married on 8 December 1795 in Burslem, Staffordshire, England. Their eldest son, James Brindley Bettington (1796–1857), arrived in Sydney in 1827 and married Rebecca Lawson (1813-1882). Her brother, William Lawson (1804-1861) married Sarah Leadbeater (1780-1830) and their youngest daughter, Sarah Maria Lawson (1821-1902) first married Ambrose Hallen (1801-1845) and later George Langley (1817-1878). Their daughter, Caroline Sophia Hallen (1843-1923) married James Brindley Bettington (1837-1915), with whom she had fourteen children. She also had a half-sister, Annie Florence Langley (1857-1923) who married Richard Fortune Blackwell (1840-1896)

    9 miniatures comprised of ten drawn watercolour portraits and 8 photographic prints of the Bettington family. Also includes a card with a wax seal of the Bettington family arms and an envelope addressed to “J. H. Bettington Esqr. ; Terragong ; Merriwa”, dated April 1919
